Every cost estimator on the internet is doing the same arithmetic, and doing it yourself means you can re-run it for any size, material, or layout a dealer suggests. Here's the method I use when clients ask what a design will cost before the formal quote exists.
Multiply planned width by depth in feet. A 12×14 pergola: 168 square feet. That single figure drives most of the pricing, so measure the zone you want covered — furniture footprint plus half a meter of walkaround — not the whole patio.

For our 168-square-foot example in cedar: 168 × $35 (midpoint) = $5,880 in materials. Same size in aluminum at $45: $7,560. Same size motorized at $200: $33,600 — the category jump in one multiplication.
Professional installation adds 30–50% of the material cost for kit-type builds, and roughly 50–70% for custom and motorized work, where site time dominates.
Cedar example: $5,880 + 40% labor = $8,230 installed. Aluminum: $7,560 + 45% = $10,960 installed. Motorized systems are usually quoted all-in already, so treat step 2's output as the installed figure and move on.

The family build — 12×14 cedar, professionally installed: 168 sq ft × $35 = $5,880, plus 40% labor ($2,350), plus $900 footings and $200 permit. Total: about $9,300, two to three days of crew time.
The premium build — 13×16 motorized louvered, full package: 208 sq ft × $200 = $41,600 base; trim to a realistic dealer quote of $32,000–$36,000 including rain sensor, lighting, one screen, and certified installation. Larger real projects quote below list; small ones rarely do.
Run your numbers first, then compare. If a quote lands within 15% of your estimate, the pricing is honest and the differences are detail-level. If it lands 30% below, something's excluded — usually footings, disposal, or electrical, and always worth asking. If it lands 30% above, the specification has quietly upgraded somewhere: heavier frame, second motor zone, premium finish. Find the line item before deciding it's greed.
