The privacy effect of mesh fabric is based on a simple optical principle: the human eye perceives the brighter side of a screen more clearly than the darker side. During daytime, the outside of the patio is brighter than the inside (assuming the patio is shaded by a roof or overhead structure). Light from outside hits the mesh and reflects back toward the viewer, making the mesh appear as a solid surface from outside. From inside the darker patio, the eye adjusts to the lower light level and can see through the mesh to the brighter outdoor scene beyond.

The openness factor determines how much of the fabric surface consists of holes versus solid material. A 3 percent openness fabric has holes covering 3 percent of the surface area, which is enough for airflow and visibility but small enough to appear solid from a distance. A 10 percent openness fabric has larger holes that are more visible, reducing the privacy effect but improving airflow and view clarity.

Even the best mesh fabric cannot provide privacy if there are gaps around the edges. A standard blind that leaves a 20-millimeter gap on each side allows neighbors to see through the opening, effectively defeating the purpose of the privacy screen. The gap may seem small, but at an angle, it provides a clear line of sight into the patio area. Multiple gaps across several blinds compound the problem, creating multiple sightlines that compromise privacy.

Zip blinds eliminate this problem entirely. Because the fabric edges are locked into side channels that run the full height of the opening, there are no side gaps. The visual barrier is continuous from one edge to the other. The only potential sightline is at the bottom, where the bottom bar meets the floor, and a properly seated bottom bar closes this gap to less than 5 millimeters.

For situations where nighttime privacy is important, such as a patio used for evening dining or entertainment with lights on, blockout fabric may be more appropriate. Blockout fabric provides complete privacy in both directions but eliminates the view and reduces airflow. Some homeowners solve this by using mesh blinds on some sides and blockout on others, or by installing dual-layer systems that combine a mesh screen with a separate blockout layer.

Apartment balconies facing neighboring buildings often benefit from mesh zip blinds because they provide privacy without making the space feel enclosed. The ability to see out while being shielded from view makes a small balcony feel larger and more connected to the surroundings.
