They bought a blind that does its job too well, blocking not just sun and wind but also the view that made them want to sit outside in the first place. The good news is that this is entirely avoidable if you understand how mesh fabric works and choose the right specifications.
Openness factor is the percentage of the fabric surface that is open space rather than woven material. A 1% openness fabric is 99% solid material, meaning it blocks almost all light and view. A 10% openness fabric has 10% open space, letting through a surprising amount of visual detail. A 30% openness fabric is barely there visually, you can read a book through it.
The trade-off is straightforward: higher openness means better view but less sun blockage and less privacy. Lower openness means more shade and privacy but a wall-like visual effect. For most residential patios where view preservation is the priority, 10% openness is the sweet spot. It blocks about 85-90% of UV rays while maintaining enough outward visibility to enjoy the landscape.
If you live on a property with a spectacular view (ocean, mountains, valley), go with 20% or 30% openness. You will get less sun protection, but the view is why you sit outside, and a 30% mesh still cuts glare significantly compared to no blind at all.
This is the single most important thing to understand about view-preserving blinds, and almost nobody explains it clearly. The color of your mesh matters more than the openness factor for view preservation.
Dark mesh (black, dark grey, dark brown) absorbs light. When you look through a dark mesh from inside (the darker side), the mesh absorbs the light bouncing off its surface and your eye focuses on the brighter scene beyond it. The mesh effectively becomes invisible, like looking through a window screen.
Light mesh (white, cream, light grey) reflects light. When you look through it from inside, the reflected light from the mesh surface is brighter than the scene beyond, so your eye focuses on the mesh rather than the view. The fabric creates a visible wall even at 10% openness.
This means a black 10% mesh gives you better outward visibility than a white 5% mesh, even though the white mesh has less open space. If view preservation is your goal, always choose the darkest mesh color you can tolerate aesthetically.
Clear PVC blinds offer 100% view preservation, since the material is transparent. They are the ultimate view-preserving option. But PVC has significant drawbacks that mesh does not: it traps heat (greenhouse effect in direct sun), scratches easily, becomes cloudy over time, and provides zero ventilation.
For a windward side where you want maximum wind block and full view, clear PVC is the right choice. For sun-facing sides where you need both shade and view, mesh is better because it reduces glare (which PVC does not) while still allowing outward visibility.
The ideal setup for a property with a great view is mesh on the sun-facing sides and clear PVC on the wind-facing side. This gives you glare reduction where you need it and unobstructed views where wind is the primary concern.
Fiberglass-PVC composite mesh has thinner individual fibers than polyester mesh at the same openness factor. Thinner fibers mean less visual interruption across the fabric surface, which translates to a clearer view. The difference is subtle but noticeable, especially at 5% and 10% openness where the fiber diameter is a larger proportion of the open space.
Fiberglass mesh is also more dimensionally stable, meaning it does not sag or stretch over time. Sagging creates wrinkles that catch light and disrupt the view. Polyester mesh, while cheaper, tends to develop these wrinkles after 2-3 years of sun exposure.
For a patio with a garden view: 10% black fiberglass mesh on all sides. This gives you shade, wind reduction, and the garden remains clearly visible through the fabric.
For a deck with an ocean or mountain view: 20% or 30% black mesh on the view-facing side, 5% mesh on the sun-facing side. Prioritize the view where it matters most and maximize shade where the view is less critical.
For a balcony with a city view: 5% dark grey mesh. The tighter weave gives privacy from neighboring buildings while the dark color preserves the cityscape view. The tighter openness also helps with wind, which is typically stronger at balcony heights.
Can I see through 5% mesh at night?
No. During the day, the light differential makes mesh easy to see through from the darker side. At night, if your patio is lit and the outside is dark, the mesh blocks outward view almost entirely. This is true regardless of openness factor.
Does higher openness mean less privacy?
Yes, but primarily at night. During the day, even a 10% mesh provides good privacy because the light differential makes it hard to see in from the brighter outside. At night with interior lighting, higher openness fabrics allow people outside to see in more easily.
Will a 30% mesh actually reduce sun and heat?
