Motorized anything. Warranty coverage typically requires certified installation. Self-install a $30,000 louvered system and you've bet the motors against your own competence — a bad trade even if you're handy.
Engineered footings and permits. Where codes demand inspected footings or stamped drawings, the paperwork belongs to licensed installers who've done it before.
DIY when the build is freestanding, wood or vinyl, under 12×14 feet, on level ground, with two people and a full weekend. Hire out when it's attached, aluminum over 12 feet of span, motorized, on a slope, or code-inspected. Between those zones, price both honestly — get the install quote before buying the kit, because the combined math occasionally surprises in either direction.
One last thing from experience: whichever route you choose, take photos the day the concrete cures. Future-you, selling the house, will thank present-you for the paperwork.
