Here's the thing — these aren't like hanging a picture frame. Wind load on an extended awning can exceed 100 pounds of lateral force, and that transfers straight into whatever you've bolted it to.

 

1. Mounting Into Siding or Stucco Instead of Structural Material
The most common and dangerous error is bolting into vinyl siding or stucco without reaching structural framing underneath. Siding is cosmetic. Stucco alone holds maybe 15 pounds before it cracks. Your awning weighs 80 to 150 pounds static, and wind multiplies that.
